Ice Fishing

There was concern among the local fishing community that the ice fishing season this winter would be in jeopardy, due to the late arrival of winter and the relatively mild temperatures we experienced through most of January.

But a cold snap in February allowed the bay to freeze enough that small groups of people could safely fish with lightweight equipment and temporary structures.

Sleds moved equipment, instead of vehicles.

And tents were used, instead of the sturdier huts that are usually in place through the winter.

We may not have the traditional semi-permanent fishing community established on the lake this winter, but at least the opportunity for a few days on the ice presented itself for those that enjoy fishing in this weather!

One last thing.  Do you use Steller?  I tried it.  I think I liked it.

  1. I haven't done a lot of fishing in my lifetime - let alone ice fishing but do have relatives who do this in Minnesota. These photos are lovely!!! I enjoyed this post.

  3. I saw some people ice fishing at Deep Creek Lake here in MD. It was my first time seeing them this season too. It's been a weird winter for us too.

  4. We haven't had many out on the lake much here in Hamilton this winter and this is the first winter that we haven't been out on the ice ourselves.

  5. How interesting! I've seen this (with the hut) in a movie or TV show. Can't remember which one, but it's like another world and another breed of people. I don't think I'd want to be there, but taking photos of everyone else would be fun. ;) Thanks for linking on Amanda's Books and More!

  6. I'm no fan of winter, so I doubt you could induce me to try this! It looks fascinating though.

  10. There's so much movement in that frozen ice. The lines add so much visual interest.

  12. We have some ice near the shore, but out in the middle of the Ottawa River is still much open water. I haven't seen fishing huts at all. Beautiful captures though.

  13. We are neighbours! It has been too mild for any ice fishing around me this winter, but usually Lake Erie has lots of ice huts on it in the wintertime :-) Great photos, thanks for sharing!

  14. It's good to be flexible and to know the limits of the ice. I don't fish but I can imagine those out there enjoying themselves.

  15. How interesting! I haven't seen ice fishing before, other than in movies. I don't think it happens at all here in Australia, and certainly not up here in the north where I live. I love seeing wintery photos while we are in the summer heat. That ice looks like its own kind of landscape.

  16. The ice here in Chicago isn't thick enough for ice fishing. We had a pretty mild winter too. Thanks for linking up for Wordless Wednesday! Have a great day.

  17. Ice fishing is practically nonexistent in Vermont this year. I've see a few people out, but they're taking their chances.

  18. Hello! Looks quite chilly there. Although I think Canada doesn't feel as chilly as the wet cold of England, where we are at the moment. I'd like to read your Dog Story, but do I really have to sign in to another app? You find our traveling Beagle Stories on http://travelbug.co/category/english/vlous-stories/ See you. #photofriday

  20. I've never really even thought about ice fishing let alone it being a common hobby. I took a quick look at Steller too, is it like Instagram for apple users? I couldn't figure out how to add any pics.

  22. I'd be so worried about the ice breaking up and falling through. I'm such a wimp. Glad you got to enjoy it though.

  23. I grew up in Minnesota and went ice fishing with my dad. He taught me how to chop through the ice and we used spears. The fish were pretty sluggish in the really cold water. I haven't though about those adventures in many years. Thanks for the memories.

  24. Ice fishing does make me think of Pingu cartoons! I am not sure it would ever be cold enough in Normandy to do this (at least I hope not!!) #PointShoot
