Kentucky Weekend

A while back I mentioned some dear friends that were moving to the United States, Kentucky to be precise.  A couple of weekends ago we went on a road trip to visit them at their new home.  It was a ten hour drive, and we arrived very late Friday night, but we managed to squeeze in a lot of visiting in two days!

We caught a fiery sunset while driving through Ohio.

Bright and early the next morning we were shooing kids out of the Cracker Barrel gift shop so we could have breakfast.  Biscuits instead of toast, gravy instead of jam... and grits, which got mixed reactions.  It looked like cream of wheat, but it sure didn't taste like it!  The hash brown casserole was amazing and I'm searching for a good copy cat recipe so I can make it at home.

Heading into Louisville for shopping, we noticed horses on display everywhere.  Must be a Kentucky Derby thing.  Which we've been coerced into returning for next spring, by the way.

I managed to snap a few decent shots from inside the car.

Oversize chess sets and a trip to Cinnabon kept the kids from complaining while we shopped for unbelievably inexpensive back to school stuff.

Got my Trader Joe's fix!

Some basketball.

A fire.  And FIREFLIES!  There were hundreds blinking around the property.  I couldn't capture them on camera but it was amazing.  I haven't seen fireflies since I was a kid and never so many as we saw that night.

A round of golf and a swim in the country club pool got the boys going Sunday morning.

An early dinner on the Indiana side of the river so we could admire Louisville.

We tried on new words, like y'all and all y'all.

And then began the long drive home.  Our car load of boys found this to be hysterical.  I wonder if the good people of Ohio know what a shart is?

It was an amazing weekend y'all.

  1. OH man!!! Sharts Road!! I can't stop laughing. That is a word we use in our house, perhaps not the best, though. And Trader Joe's and Cracker Barrel are must-haves, right? Looks like a great time! I've never been to Kentucky but I also have dear friends there.

  2. It was definitely a derby thing. I have a dear friend that lives in Shelbyville - we fly into Louisville. Trust me, "ya'll" are going to love it. They have an interest "southern" accent to. It's so unmistakable that I always say to a person with that accent, "You're from Kentucky aren't you?"

Ok let me ramble because all of these photos are absolutely beautiful, but here are some of my favs. The sunset is gorgeous and so peaceful looking, I personally love Cracker Barrel, the huge chess pieces are cool I think I would be playing with them more than my Kiddies, Oooh Aaah YumYummy Cinnabon...I can't believe they put Y'all on the water tank and Sharts is not exactly a name I would choose for a road...LMBO I really enjoyed taking this visit to Kentucky with you-thanks for sharing :D

  16. Great memories and fun captures of them! I really wanted to have a Cinnabon when we were in the States this last July and visit a Waffle House, but these opportunities never arose. I got a lot of other good memories though. And, Cracker Barrel became a hit when my dad and I were on a road trip to Atlanta, GA when I was a teenager. And the gift shop! Enjoy your week!

  20. Hey, I'm Jenifer from Not Quite Mom of the Year stopping by from Grow Your Blog party. Kentucky is so beautiful. I've only been there a couple of times. Your trip sounds like so much fun. Any vacation that includes shopping and Cinnabon is tops in my book! Where did you shop to get the "unbelievably inexpensive" school clothes? I'd love to know!

  22. Okay I live in the south, but I'm from the north no idea what sharts is. I must say I love the south, but have yet to visit Kentucky from the photos kind of reminds me of Tennessee. I enjoyed your pictures, but being a lover of chess those giant chess pieces are awesome.

Thanks for sharing on Tuesdays With a Twist.
